Living in Portsmouth

Welcome to Portsmouth

Portsmouth is one of the most historic cities in Hampton Roads, and it shows: brick sidewalks, porches and the Elizabeth River right at the end of the street. It’s full of charm and often a great value.

Neighborhoods to know
  • Olde Towne

A historic district of beautifully preserved homes near the waterfront.

  • Port Norfolk

Historic homes and river views just north of Olde Towne.

  • Park View

A historic neighborhood of early-1900s homes.

  • Churchland

Established suburban neighborhoods on the western side of the city.

  • Cradock

A historic planned community built during World War I.

Every neighborhood has its own feel; I’m happy to help you compare them in person.

Lifestyle & commute

Getting around

The Downtown and Midtown tunnels put Norfolk minutes away, and I-264 and the Western Freeway connect you westward. Portsmouth is home to Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth and Coast Guard Base Portsmouth, which makes it a natural fit for many military and civilian workers.

Commute times vary a lot with traffic, tunnels and time of day. I’m always glad to drive the route with you.

Schools

A note on schools

Portsmouth is served by Portsmouth Public Schools. School assignments are set by address and can change, so please verify zoning for any specific home directly with the school division before you buy.
